I should probably leave a bit of a review here, so people know what they're getting into.... Harry Potter and the Knights of Walpurgis is an epic version of Harry Potter's post- Order of the Phoenix summer and his 6th year at Hogwarts. Part One, "A Tale of Two Hogwarts," begins at school with the arrival of the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Raven Xavier, and a young vampire hunter named Deanna Sande. An excursion into the forest leads to a trip through a portal into an alternate reality, with Professor Snape along for the ride. The altiverse is full of big intelligent cats called Dravens, and its other residents include Sirius Black the Death Eater, a heroic Gilderoy Lockhart, a scarless Harry Potter, a strange girl named Hermione Snape, wild-man Albus Dumbledore assisted by good-guy Draco Malfoy, and Lucius Malfoy as the Headmaster of Hogwarts. Here our stalwart heroes face their greatest fears, murder, death, torture, and the possibility of being eaten for breakfast before they manage to make it back to their own reality, with refugees Hermione Snape and the good Draco Malfoy in tow. Shortcut: www.fanfiction.net/s/1581596/1/Part Two, "Blood Feud," tells the story of Snape's journey to Romania with the vampire Jeremy Darkur. Their mission: to teach the local vampires an urge-controlling potion in order to avert a disastrous conflict in the area. Along the way Snape confronts dark events from his past and Jeremy pays a terrible price for the success of their quest. There's a colorful cast of vampires, old friends from England, and a cameo appearance by Charlie Weasley. Shortcut: www.fanfiction.net/s/1581596/21/Part Three, "The Knights of Walpurgis," opens with a bang as Harry loses a family member, learns a shocking secret about another, and is forced to leave 4 Privet Drive to go into hiding. As the Order searches frantically for him, Raven brings Hermione Snape and the good Draco, now styling himself Eustace Xavier, to her ancestral home at Dragon's Gate, the new headquarters for the Order of the Phoenix. While Raven confronts her past, Harry, now reunited with the Order and his friends, must deal with one secret after another about his family and his least-favorite professor. Once back at Hogwarts, old rivalries and new alliances are turned on their heads when horrible, all-too-familiar things begin to happen around the school. It's a confusing year for Harry with two know-it-all Hermiones, new sides to Draco Malfoy, upheaval at the Ministry of Magic, romance, goblins, catatonia and death, bandits, duels and plots, vampires, innocence and guilt, and an enchanting personage known as Ickus. Shortcut: www.fanfiction.net/s/1581596/35/The story has everything: dark memories, funny moments, the coolest cat ever to hit fanfic, new creatures (including the mighty chupacabra!), backstory that covers all its bases -- even when it conflicts with canon -- and a commitment to avoiding Mary-Sues. This story came to my attention in a fanfiction.net listing just before the second part was completed. What kept me from passing it by was the exquisite character-torture (especially in Snape's case) in Chapter 3 -- I knew I'd found a fic written by people who knew what they were doing. The intricacies of the subplots in the first two sections kept me going. I loved willingness of the authors to strike down characters with everything from personal tragedy to severe sunburn -- and to explain canon while turning it on its ear and daring to explore all the implications of their major "what ifs". I first met Mlle and Demonic Neko after leaving my characteristically overly-involved reviews on ff.net and correcting a few of their canon errors *coughtheKnightBusispurplenotblueandChoChangisinadifferentyearcough* for them. They asked me to be their Canon Mistress Beta, an honor which I hope I live up to. And now I spend countless hours bouncing off the chat room walls with them, have become a Cultist at the Shrine of Snape, and get to read their stuff before it gets posted. Pretty cool, huh? The story is long and involved, but Mlle Bienvenu and Demonic Neko have created a deeper world built on the foundations of JK Rowling's characters. I aspire to explain Snape's past half as well as they have, though perhaps with less ice cream. ;D EDIT BY LOLUA (June '05): I updated the links so they work now. I guess I forgot to do that when ff.net reformatted.

"A committment to avoiding Mary Sues"? Well, the gender be be wrong, but this Raven Xavier and the entire race of Dravens sure sound like Mary Sues to me... You should read the fic before you make a conclusion like that. And the Dravens aren't especially nice kitties or evil kitties pretending to be nice -- they are just... well... cats. Predatory and protective instincts and all. Oh, and sarcasm. Lots of sarcasm.
