The only thing I can remember about a dog is that Cedric transfigures a rock into a dog to distract his dragon during the First Task. But since the dragon-fighting scenes are currently being filmed, I'm thinking that's not what this dog would be doing.
Possibly the dog would be part of a Charms or Transfiguration lesson as a partially completed project. Remember Ron's furry cup in the CoS film that had a tail and squeaked? He tried to change a rat into a water goblet and only got halfway there.
The thing is, I don't think they learn anything in GoF that would require the paws being removed from a dog, as Vanishing would. They learn Summoning Charms and their opposite, Banishing Charms, and I think Hermione talks about Switching Spells when she's suggesting things Harry could do against the Hungarian Horntail. So maybe it's for that, or something similar. Switching the dog's legs with a pair of rubber chickens?
I could see how a dog with only 2 legs would be useful in filming a scene with partial Vanishment -- much easier than the green-screening involved in removing Lt. Dan's legs in Forrest Gump. But they don't learn Vanishing until OotP....

HPANA received an e-mail from the owners of the 2-legged dog Faith. An excerpt from that letter: So it sounds like Faith would be part of a Triwizard Task. They've already filmed the First Task on-location in Scotland and Dan's underwater stunts for the Second Task, so would she be for the Third Task? And how? (Harry has to get past a 2-legged dog instead of a Skrewt or a giant spider?? Hardly sounds like a Triwizard challenge to me, and it's not a great place for comic relief.) Photos and the complete communique from Faith's family can be found at www.hpana.com/news.18300.html.

Oh, but if they did indeed film any HP scene in Missouri or Arkansas ... I would soooo be there . And if I get that "Undisclosed Item the Shouldn't Even Be Available For Months, if Ever" , maybe it will shed some light on a two-legged pupdog.
