JK Rowling made the following announcement today on her official site:
JKR EXPECTING THIRD CHILD
I am really delighted to say that I am expecting a third baby, who is due next year. I always wanted three children, so I could not be happier.
Now, I know that many Harry Potter fans’ first reaction will be what does this mean for the timing of book six? (I’m not maligning you… I’m sure you’re happy for me… but I know you really want that book!) So let me reassure you that book six remains well on track and, fingers crossed of course, I don’t foresee any baby-related interruptions or delays. I still can’t say for sure when it will be finished, but I have written a lot and I really like it (a reckless challenge to fate, that; I bet the next chapter goes horribly wrong now).
Most people wait until the third month of pregnancy or later to make such announcements, in case of early complications. So that probably pegs her due date for sometime in January or later.
JKR has experience writing and dealing with a newborn at the same time: she did it while finishing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I don't imagine that she'd want or be able to be doing any involved writing for the first few months at least. (I'll have to go back and do some timeline research to finalize that window.), because she's said several times that she doesn't want other people to raise her children. She'll be changing nappies and doing the other wonderful bonding things that mothers do with their newborns.
This makes me think that she thinks, at least, that barring any major problems either medical or editorial (*knocks on wood*), the book may be finished or in an advanced draft state by the time the baby is due.
It takes a couple of months between completion of manuscript and release date, for typesetting, illustration, shipping, and all that fun stuff. Anyone in the printing industry (*pointed look at Roxy*) have a better explanation?
So as far as I'm concerned, we should be looking for the HBP book maybe by late spring or early summer of 2005. Yipee!
