Criteria:
To avoid just classing this as "The Hero," we decided to require a prophecy or other singularity for "One" status. For example, Robin Hood is not a "One' because no one made a prophecy about him, and he wasn't the Only One who could do anything. He's your ordinary, run-of-the-mill, hero.
Gray areas:
Is a mystical aspect of a character's origins, without a proper prophecy, enough for "The One" status? I don't know enough about Clark Kent/Superman to call him a One or not, so he's kind of in a gray area.
Instructor:
Jesus Christ - Christianity, the Bible, etc.
Believe in him or not, he's definitely described as The One. Christ is Greek for "Messiah," which (I think) is essentially Hebrew for "The One" (though there are a lot of tags applied to that One-ness that I don't want to get into, as it would take too much room and knowledge of Hebrew that I don't possess).
Class Membership:
Harry Potter - Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Harry is "The One with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord," as we found out in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars prequels
Anakin, as Qui-Gon Jinn believes, is "the one who will bring balance to the Force." Anakin's a bit problematic, as he eventually becomes Darth Vader, an archetypical Nemesis for his own son, Luke Skywalker.
Neo - The Matrix movies
I fell asleep during the first Matrix movie, so I'm a little foggy on why and how he's The One. Maybe it had something to do with special powers over the Machines or Agent Smith, I dunno. But come on, his name is an anagram for "One".... he belongs on this list.
Jeffrey Sinclair - Babylon 5 TV series
Ambassador Delenn - Babylon 5 TV series
John Sheridan - Babylon 5 TV series
This is kind of a Triune "One," as Zathras describes in the two-part episode "War Without End." Sinclair, as the once-and-future Valen, is the One That Was. Delenn, for her role in the wars and in becoming part-human to balance Sinclair's transformation, is named as the One That Is. Sheridan, because of he future work with interstellar alliances and removing the Shadows and Vorlons from the galaxy, is the One That Will Be. Zathras is wise. I think I will erect statue to Zathras.
Much more to come, including King Arthur, Buffy, and Aladdin ...
